Man arrested for attempted murder after two cops were run over

A MAN has been charged after two cops were allegedly dragged to the ground and run over before being punched a horror smash.

The 26-year-old will appear at Basildon Magistrates' Court today accused of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and assaulting an emergency worker, among other charges.

Dayne Cooper, from Chafford Hundred, is also accused of dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen for analysis and driving without insurance.

The cops were carrying out a stop check when a car mounted a grass verge and ploughed into them in Essex, on Tuesday night.

A female officer was then allegedly hit in the face by the driver at around 9.15pm. Both officers were taken to hospital where they were treated for non-serious injuries.

Police appealed for anyone with information or footage to come forward.

Chief Inspector Richard Melton, District Commander for Thurrock, said: “Fortunately, our officers were not seriously injured and they have been discharged from hospital.
“Specialist officers have been carrying out welfare checks with them ahead of their return to work.

“No officer should ever be assaulted during their job, helping to keep communities safe, and anyone looking to cause them harm will be arrested and dealt with accordingly.”

STRING OF COP ATTACKS

Last year saw a string of attacks on police officers – with 20,000 offences under the Assaults on Emergency Workers Act in the year to November 2019, startling figures show.

PC Gareth Phillips suffered life-changing injuries after being mown down with his own police car and left for dead in Moseley, Birmingham, on August 10.

PC Andrew Harper became the first police officer to be killed in the line of duty since PC Keith Palmer, 48, was stabbed to death in the Westminster terror attack in 2017.

The 28-year-old was killed on August 15 after being hit by a suspected getaway vehicle while responding to a burglary  in Berkshire.

He was due to go on honeymoon with his new wife, Lissie, 28, who he had been married to for just four weeks.

A week before the tragedy, PC Stuart Outten, 28, was stabbed in the head as he tried to stop a van in Leyton, East London but managed to Taser the suspects.

While in Northern Ireland, officers were "lucky to be alive" after being lured to a bomb blast on the border.
