Madeleine McCann's mum Kate said efit that looks like potential German suspect was 'very important' to finding missing daughter

KATE McCann believes an efit linking Maddie's abduction to a German serial killer could finally crack the case of her daughter's disappearance.

She made the revelation in her book "Madeleine" where she spoke about how important it was to find four people based on sightings of men in the days leading up to Maddie’s abduction in May 2007.

Kate, in her 2011, bestseller said: “We believe that identifying these individuals could bring us much closer to finding Madeleine.”

One of the photofits, simply numbered “four” resembles the German sex murderer, now 48.

It is based on a man spotted from a veranda of a first floor apartment in the same block as the McCanns.

And eerily it was on the same day Maddie disappeared on May 3, 2007.

He was seen slinking through a gate by the access path between 4pm to 5pm.

Kate discovered her daughter missing shortly before 10pm.

Recalling the incident in her book, she wrote: "His behaviour struck the witness as suspicious.

COPS PROBE KRAUT KILLER

"He appeared to be trying to close the gate quietly, using both hands, and very slowly and deliberately checking in both directions before walking to the end of the pathway and on to Rua Dr Gentil Martins."

The gate he walked through is understood to be to apartment 5B, next to the McCann’s 5A, where Kate and Gerry's friends Matt and Rachael Oldfield and their young daughter Grace were staying.

The couple and their toddler had been on the beach that afternoon with the holiday group from 3pm to 6pm.

The news comes after it emerged cops probing Maddie's disappearance are investigating Martin Ney, 48, who is serving life for abducting and murdering three kids in 2012.

Goncalo Amaral, the Portuguese cop who first led the hunt for Madeleine, revealed that police were probing a "German paedophile who is in prison".

Ney was working for an evangelical church on a project for the homeless in Portugal when Madeleine disappeared, it's claimed.

Ney was said to have been familiar with the Algarve after travelling widely in Portugal in the 1990s.

The brute was jailed for killing three German kids — Stefan Jahr, 13, in 1992, Dennis Rostel, eight, in 1995, and Dennis Klein, nine, in 2001.

He is also suspected of the murder of a child in Holland in 1998 and another in France in 2004.

The timings raise the possibility Ney murdered a youngster every three years – 1992, 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2004, before Madeleine vanished in May 2007.

Family spokesperson Clarence Mitchell said of potential new kidnapper Ney told The Sun Online: “It might be him and he fits the profile, he is a known predatory paedophile and he’s a foreigner.

“He wore camouflage gear, carried knives and jumped out of bushes to pounce on victims.

“It is quite possible and plausible police are looking at him again but it could be someone else.

“There is a degree of credibility it is Ney but we cannot speculate."

'SCOTLAND YARD TIP OFF'

Mr Mitchell said that Portuguese Police’s fresh bid to close in on Maddie’s kidnapper was “action on a tip off from Scotland Yard".

He explained: “The Yard has been doing a fair amount of work on this new person of interest and they then ask Portuguese officers to nail it down.

“If activity needs to be done, the local police have to do it even if it’s a foreign force’s investigation.

“And if Ney is the person of interest a German force will then have to get involved to interview him on their soil.”

He added: “Kate and Gerry are not in a position to comment on this, nor would they because it is operational detail and they will not discuss it.

“It is purely for the police if they choose to comment.

“The family will wait to hear of any developments and remain grateful to the British police for everything they are doing.”
