- Tweet was posted on Valentine’s Day in 2013 but has resurfaced on February 14
- Home Office has failed to take post branded ‘disgusting’ down in five years
Twitter users have slammed the Home Office for an ‘appalling’ Valentine’s Day tweet about prosecuting couples in sham marriages.
The tweet reads: ‘#Rosesareredvioletsareblue, if your marriage is a sham we’ll be on to you’ #happyvalentinesday’.
It was posted by the Governement department in 2013 but has resurfaced five years later after bosses refused to take it down.
Theresa May was Home Secretary at the time, under former Prime Minister David Cameron.

People branded the post ‘disgraceful’, ‘appalling’ and ’embarrassing’ and demanded it be removed.
Some shared stories of how the Home Office has ‘failed’ their families, while others came up with mock Valentine’s Day rhymes.
One person posted: ‘Who thought this was a good idea?’, while another told employees to ‘do some real work’.
Someone else commented in response: ‘Fire trucks are red Policemen wear blue There’s not many left And that’s all on you.’
Another funny rhyme read: ‘Roses are red My favourite fruit is cherries Remember that time Chris Grayling was sold some invisible ferries.’
One man posted claiming his Italian wife had been sent someone else’s details and ID card when applying for UK residency.
Other married couples complained they are forced to live in separate countries due to UK immigration restriction.
Some users appeared to think the tweet was posted today, calling on the Home Office to ‘delete’ it and ‘fire your social media team’.
Afzal Khan, Labour MP for Gorton, posted: ‘Absolutely inappropriate from the Home Office. @LabourHomeTeam would never use a day like Valentine’s Day for such remarks. Once again a shocking reminder of the Government’s Hostile Environment Policy.’
A Home Office spokesman said they could not comment on the tweet, but it ‘wasn’t in line with current policy’.
