Etienne Capoue could face £70,000 fine after 'cops clocked him doing 116mph on the M25'

WATFORD midfielder Etienne Capoue faces a lengthy driving ban if convicted after he was clocked doing at least 116mph while undertaking a police car.

A dash-cam allegedly caught him whizz past on an off slip of the M25 in his £150,000 Mercedes G Wagon.

Cops put footage on Twitter after the incident in December but later deleted it. Capoue, 30, stands trial at Stevenage Magistrates on Thursday.

The video of the Frenchman, who joined Watford for a club-record fee of £6.3 million in 2015, appeared to show him criss-crossing on Britain’s busiest motorway at high speed between junction 22 and 20, near to Watford’s London Colney training ground.

As the footage gained attention on social media, police refused to name the star and deleted the post altogether.

According to the Sentencing Council, the standard penalty for exceeding 100mph in a 70mph zone is a ban in the range of seven to 56 days or six points, and a Band C fine in the range of 125-175% of weekly income.

Capoue, who will be hoping to win his first piece of silverware when Watford face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 18, currently earns around £40,000 per week.

Where speed is ‘grossly in excess’ of the limit the court will consider a disqualification or more than 56 days.

If guilty he could be fined up to 175 per cent of his £40,000 weekly wage plus four to six points or a ban of seven to 28 days.

The Mercedes G Wagon has become a must-have car for celebs and footballers since its launch in the US in 2002.

Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, TV star Kim Kardashian and boxer Floyd Mayweather all have one.
