The Last Kingdom returns to Netflix with season five soon and fans are rooting for Uhtred (played by Alexander Dreymon) to claim back Bebbanburg. The protagonist has been trying to fulfil his destiny since the series began and he is running out of opportunities. But new character Constantin (Ross Anderson) could prevent Uhtred from reclaiming his homeland.

Will King Constantin become Uhtred’s biggest enemy?

The final season is based on books nine and 10 of The Saxon Stories – Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer.

The series was created when only 10 of Bernard Cornwell’s books were in existence.

Creators of the Anglo-Saxon drama have introduced some new faces to the final season.

One of which is King Constantin, who appears in Cornwell’s novels and plays a huge role in The Flame Bearer.

In book 10, Uhtred finally sets out to reclaim his childhood home, which remains held by his cousin.

He fails to do so at first, and Uhtred is left distracted by other problems that arise.

Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson), who becomes king of Northumbria, is in need of help to fight against those who break a truce with Aethelflaed (Millie Brady).

Meanwhile, Uhtred’s men find themselves outnumbered by Scots, led by King Constantin.

They are keen to take Bebbanburg for themselves, so Uhtred may have finally met his match.

Eventually, Bebbanburg is besieged by the Scots and Uhtred has an idea to infiltrate the kingdom.

Fans will have to wait and see what happens between Constantin and Uhtred in the TV adaptation.

Carnival Films shared a first-look image of Constantin on the show’s official Instagram account.

The caption alongside the photo read: “If your mission was to avert war you have picked the wrong king to dissuade.”

This may be a direct quote from Constantin to Uhtred as part of a stand-off.

The king is based on a real historical figure, Constantine of Scotland – who ruled Alba.

Alba is the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland.

Aethelstan (Harry Gilby) invaded Scotland in 934, so he may also come up against Constantin in the series.

At the end of the fourth season, Uhtred was tasked with raising Aethelstan as a fierce leader.

The son of Edward (Timothy Innes) is destined to become the king of a united England.

How much of a role Constantin plays in his journey is yet to be discovered.

Fans are still awaiting the official release date for the final instalment.

There is hope the new episodes will air in March or April 2022.

Taking to Twitter in anticipation, Ebone said: “When are people going to realize that Uhtred means business?! He slaying everybody!! #TheLastKingdom.”

Rokesbae said: “Has Netflix just forgotten #TheLastKingdom exists or?”

The Last Kingdom seasons 1-4 are on Netflix now.
