Homes Under The Hammer star Martin Roberts says he's 'scared and emotionally battered' in update on heart condition

MARTIN Roberts has revealed he's "scared and emotionally battered" after a heart condition left him just hours from death.

The Homes Under the Hammer star, 58, was rushed to hospital this week for emergency surgery after a 'massive amount of fluid' was discovered around his heart.

In an exclusive update to The Sun, Martin said: "Firstly, I have been overwhelmed by all the messages of love and support I’ve received. They mean the world to me and help lift my spirits, at a time I feel a bit scared and very emotionally battered, like you wouldn’t believe. Thank you. Thank you."

Reassuring fans that he is on the mend, he continued: "The heart problem seems to have stabilised. They are now running tests to find out what caused the problem in the first place. Seems this fluid build up around the heart that nearly killed me was an effect (a deadly one) rather than a cause.

"I’m being transferred to the respiratory team today as they think it might have started with a serious lung infection. I may be in hospital for another two weeks."

The emotional trauma of the ordeal is proving difficult to process, with Martin admitting he's had nightmares.

NSPCC chief Sir Peter Wanless commented on a video Martin shared from his hospital room: "Scary – all the best Martin – so glad you are in recovery!"

Martin replied: "Thanks Peter. Bloody scary I tell you. All those ‘what if I hadn’t come to hospital’ nightmare thoughts. Not least because I’ve still got a few mor ££million to raise for you."

The I'm A Celebrity star has been inundated with well wishes from fans and has taken time to reply to many of them.

One supporter said: "Get well soon! How frightening for you."

To which Martin replied: "Crickey I mean yeah. I’m still struggling with the thought [heart emoji]."

He wrote to another fan: "Jeez what a scare. Bit emotionally in pieces right now. But yeah. Too much still to do x."

While he described it as "a real shocker" to a third.

One fan said they had had pericarditis and needed two litres of fluid draining, prompting Martin to say: "Sounds identical".

Yesterday Martin revealed he was watching his own show in hospital.

He said: "Well, I have to say this isn’t where I expected to be watching Homes Under the Hammer."

"Little bit of good news, little bit of bad news. I ended up in hospital in Bath yesterday, I had a few chest pains and just feeling generally lousy, so I was brought in here and turns out I had a massive amount of fluid all around my heart, which was actually stopping my heart working.

"Had they not got rid of it, which they did in an emergency operation last night, then it’s sort of quite serious, like, hours to live kind of c***.
