David Bowie biopic Stardust trailer shows off Ziggy Stardust’s unknown struggles

Stardust: Johnny Flynn stars as David Bowie in film trailer

Stardust struggled to get off the ground last year, as the coronavirus pandemic stunted its growth. Instead of airing at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2020 as planned, it was shown off in October 2020 at the San Diego International Film Festival. This week the first release trailer for the film has been dropped, detailing exactly what the film includes.

The trailer for the biopic, which can be seen at the top of this article, shows off an almost-broken version of David Bowie.

The international star, played by Johnny Flynn, is shown in a decrepit state, trying to figure out who he is as an artist.

Unlike the biopics that have come before it, such as Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, Stardust tells just a portion of the story of David Bowie’s life and career.

Specifically, the trailer shows off one of the first tours Bowie embarked on in the USA.

During this tour the star struggled to connect with his new international audiences.

This is illustrated in the trailer when a journalist asks: “Who or what is David Bowie?”

It goes on to show off the first meeting between the Life on Mars singer and his US publicist, Ron Oberman.

During this fateful meeting, Oberman announces: “If you can’t be yourself then be someone else.”

Throughout the film fans will see how Ziggy Stardust became the poster boy of Bowie’s artistry.

The film’s synopsis reads: “Meet David before Bowie. One of the greatest icons in music history; But who was the young man behind the many faces?

“In 1971, a 24 year old David Bowie embarks on his first road trip to America with Mercury Records publicist Ron Oberman, only to be met with a world not yet ready for him.

“STARDUST offers a glimpse behind the curtain of the moments that inspired the creation of Bowie’s first and most memorable alter ego Ziggy Stardust, capturing the turning point that cemented his career as one of the world’s greatest cultural icons.”

Despite the film focussing on David Bowie, his music, and his journey, none of his music is going to appear in the movie.

According to NME, Bowie’s son Duncan Jones said the estate hasn’t endorsed the film, and therefore hasn’t granted the use of any of the legend’s music.

Instead, the film supposedly shows off Bowie covering songs which he actually did cover during his time on tour.

David Bowie tragically died on January 10, 2016 following a battle against liver cancer.

The star had been diagnosed with the illness 18 months earlier, but had kept the details of it private.

Bowie died just two days after his birthday, and the release of his 25th album, Blackstar.

The album received a collection of rave reviews, including five stars from The Daily Telegraph, and AllMusic.

Stardust is on digital platforms from January 15.
