Sofya Zhuk is used to racking up the “likes” with her stunning Instagram snaps, but not every photo has appeased the masses.

Speaking recently to the publication RT, Zhuk — who was forced to retire from tennis due to a back injury — opened up about the “avalanche of messages” she received after posting a topless shot in April.

“I didn’t get quite what was the big deal,” the 20-year-old said, according to The Sun. “I posted a photo, so what? When I share something, I’m not trying to send any message.”

In the photo, the athlete-turned-model has her back toward the camera as she covers her breasts.

“I’m just posting a picture that I like,” Zhuk said.

“But when I shared that [topless] photo, I received an avalanche of messages,” she added, noting the commentary was “so aggressive.”

Zhuk, who is currently signed with Elite Model Management Miami, believes some fans have struggled to see her having a life beyond athletics.

“I just think people simply can’t accept that I’ve found myself outside tennis, that I can live happily without sport and not sinking into depression, she said.

In 2015, the Russian-born Zhuk won the Wimbledon girls’ singles title at 15. A year later, she made her WTA Tour singles debut at the 2016 Miami Open.

Now focused on her modeling career, Zhuk’s 61,000 followers are also awaiting her next steps.
