Save big on your gas and electricity bills with our savvy tips — plus win a luxury cruise for two worth more than £2,700
Regulator Ofgem yesterday warned the average energy bill could soar by £117 a year, after raising the price caps on gas and electricity.
The body insisted the increase was due only to suppliers’ rising costs and was not a licence for profiteering.
But there are ways to ease the pain of spiralling energy bills.
- Turn it off. You can bring down your bill by £30 a year by turning off appliances, according to advice from the Energy Saving Trust. Remember, standby mode still uses energy — and so costs you money.
- Check it out. Bills creep up if you are on the wrong plan, as with mobile phones. Study your bill to see what you are paying for. Comparison sites such as Uswitch can steer you towards the best deals and you can get up to £25 cashback at Quidco if you use the site to switch energy supplier.
- Jump out. Cut down the time you spend scrubbing yourself in the shower. It is estimated that just one minute less a day in the shower could shave £7 a year off your bills.
- Switch’n’save. Use a company that will automatically switch your supplier when they find a better deal for you.
As well as saving you money, it will also save you the time and effort it takes to swap. Find out more about changing your provider at switchcraft.co.uk/thesun — where they find the best deal for you, for ever! - Set it aside. After a decadent December and maybe a “dry” January, this month is sometimes called “frugal February”.
Many people choose the shortest month of the year to do a savings challenge — or do something that will add up over the course of the year. Try putting away £1 every Monday, £2 each Tuesday, £3 each Wednesday and so on.
It may not always realistic but the sum soon adds up. We spend more at weekends, so try a no-spend Saturday and put that aside. Even a little saving can help. - PRICES correct at time of press. Deals and offers subject to availability.

‘Bats smell like Daddy’s socks . . . ’
I think I’m a bit like the nice witch in Room on the Broom. I’ve got ginger hair and I like cats.
I put on a hard hat and yellow jacket, just like a real builder, and met the people making the rooms.
In the book, the witch keeps dropping things and at Chessington you have to find them all. In the first room you help the dog find the witch’s hat, jumping up and down until it falls out of a tree.
In the second room I stuck my hand in a bale of hay to find the witch’s bow. Then there’s a room where you have to find the missing wand. It’s hidden somewhere quite funny!
There’s a mirror maze, talking animals and a massive dragon blowing out smoke.
The funniest bit was when I tested the smells they’re using in the rooms – flowers, trees and leaves. One was meant to smell of bats but it smelled like my daddy’s socks.
I’ll definitely go back – my brother will jump at that dragon
