How Kacey Musgraves' Ombré Suit for the ACMs Pays Sweet Homage to Her Latest Album

Kacey Musgraves went colorful on the carpet at the 2019 ACMs on Sunday night — and completely stole the show.

The 30-year-old singer, who is nominated in three categories, arrived in a technicolor blue, pink and green ombré two-piece Christian Cowan suit (which she wore sans shirt!) with pleated detailing on the sleeves and pants.

And that special detailing held a particularly special meaning for the Grammy-winning star.

“I saw it and immediately was like, ‘This has my name written all over it,’ ” Musgraves told PEOPLE on the red carpet of her stylish suit. “It even kind of reminds me of the album cover a little bit. A nod to the fan on the album cover, just all the pleats.”

“I love a gradient, I love anything ombré,” she continued, “and anything rainbow, clearly.”

Musgraves was referring to the cover for her latest album, Golden Hour, which features the singer covering a portion of her face with a pink folding fan.

Musgraves is up for female artist of the year, album of the year and song of the year at Sunday’s awards, which are being held in Las Vegas.

She’s been on a winning-spree ever since Golden Hour was released last year.

She recently took home album of the year at the 2019 Grammy Awards, in February, and arrived to that big night wearing a tulle, pleated Valentino Haute Couture gown that also paid tribute to her album cover in a similar way as the ACMs look.

“I love this dress — it immediately struck me because it reminded me of the fan that was on my album cover,” she told PEOPLE on the Grammys carpet.

Musgraves’ style has been a red carpet hit throughout awards season thanks in part to her close work with stylist Erica Cloud, who works with Musgraves on her press appearances and tour looks.

“Kacey and I discussed the next phase in her career both musically and aesthetically. We both love the ’70s and color pairing and felt there was a way to interpret that through her wardrobe,” McCloud previously told PEOPLE. “We wanted her clothing to be a nod to the past but grounded in the future, like her music, and to create a strong overall look that felt familiar but aspirational and visually impactful.”

Cloud said the goal was “creating an overall vibe and not something that is so ‘in your face.’ “

Of Musgraves, she said, “She’s so talented that she doesn’t need a lot of bells and whistles. Color and music can go hand-in-hand in creating a mood and strong sensory effect, so we base looks off of whatever song she is performing, complete with the band matching or tonal as well.”
