Steph McGovern: ‘Nice to be defended’ Star responds to ‘harsh’ remark amid clothing frenzy

Last week, Steph McGovern, 37, who is heavily pregnant, fronted BBC news show Have I Got News For You. During her one-off stint, the former BBC Breakfast host wore a vibrant blue jumper emblazoned with the words “Girly Swot”.

Knew you were joking. Nice to be defended in case you weren’t though.

After her appearance on the BBC programme, she told her 383,000 Twitter followers where they could purchase the clothing item.

She wrote: “The #GirlySwot jumper….designed by @jamesmobbs + me, you can now get from @balconyshirts.

“£5 of each sold will go to @Rubiescharity — helping to build confidence in young girls.

“Just to reiterate – I am not making any money from this! https://girlyswot.secure-decoration.com/.”

The presenter later followed up her post telling fans she didn’t “expect to become a part-time jumper dealer” as she insisted many fans had asked her for further details.

Following this, a Twitter user wrote: “Nice to know that if the TV work turns to s**t you’ve got something to fall back on.”

However, another fan of Steph’s claimed the latter comment was “harsh”.

They replied: “That’s a bit harsh mind, Richard. Steph’s great and she’s a Northerner to boot!”

Justifying his comment, the first Twitter user responded: “I like Steph and it was meant as a joke. Sorry if I offended you Steph. Good luck with the new show and the baby.”

The Watchdog star shared her thoughts on the comment, telling both parties she was not offended by the flippant remark.

“No offence taken!” she wrote, adding: “Knew you were joking. Nice to be defended in case you weren’t though.”

Elsewhere, during her time on the panel show, regular panelist Ian Hislop made a flippant comment about Steph McGovern’s sexuality.

His comment came during a game on the show where guests were challenged to guess which politicians had been called a c**k, a dork or a buffoon.

After a dispute about one particular politician, Ian said he would’ve liked to have used a more offensive word if he was a guest on Steph’s upcoming new show next year.

His co-star Paul Merton then asked Steph whether Ian would be the c**k, a dork or a buffoon on her show.

“I’m going with c**k,” she jokingly replied, prompting the panelist to reply: “Not what I’ve heard.”

Steph appeared shocked by his swift reply before she burst into fits of laughter.

The television star is expecting her first child with her girlfriend, whose identity is unknown.

The mum-to-be recently said she is due “any day now” in a post on Twitter.

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
