Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams Talk About Work, Friendship, Love … and What a Nightmare They Are To Work With

Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams are the cover subjects of the the April issue of Rolling Stone. The cover story will make Game of Thrones fans extremely happy, giving many details about the development of both Sophie’s character — Sansa Stark — and Maisie’s — Arya Stark — over the course of the eight seasons.

But more than simply provide details about GOT, the article focuses on the close personal friendship between the two actresses, who first met during a chemistry reading for their roles as Stark sisters prior to the show’s first season when Sophie was 13 years old and Maisie was only 12. In the article, Sophie says that the two were immediately “pretty much best friends.”

“I thought Sophie was the coolest thing I’d ever seen,” agrees Maisie. “I get why they do chemistry reads, because when it’s right, it’s so right. Like, we’re best friends. And they could see that all those years ago, and it must have been real magic watching these two girls have the best time together.”

One unexpected revelation in the article, however, was an admission that Sophie made about her sexuality. Sophie, who is engaged to pop singer Joe Jonas, admitted to Rolling Stone that she has also had relationships with women. So she was not really expecting to be engaged in a traditional relationship with a man at such a young age.

“I was fully preparing myself to be single for the rest of my life,” she tells the magazine. “[But] I think once you’ve found the right person, you just know. I feel like I’m much older a soul than I am in age. I feel like I’ve lived enough life to know. I’ve met enough guys to know — I’ve met enough girls to know. I don’t feel 22. I feel like 27, 28.”

When asked about dating girls, Sophie seems like it should not be considered a big deal. “Everybody experiments,” she says in the article, before adding “It’s part of growing up. I love a soul, not a gender.”

But, turning back to their friendship, Sophie and Maisie admit that being so close is not always easy for others who have to work with them on the set. “We’re a nightmare to work with,” Sophie says. “If you’re working with your best friend, you will never get any work done, ever. Anytime we tried to be serious about anything, it’s just the hardest thing in the world.”

“I think they really regretted putting us in scenes together,” she admits. “It was difficult.”
