Jane Cox: ‘I know it’s the right thing’ Emmerdale’s Lisa Dingle speaks out on soap exit

Jane Cox, 67, recently revealed she was quitting Emmerdale after playing iconic character Lisa Dingle for 23 years. The soap star explained she was influenced by the death of her mum and her own personal yearning to explore other aspects of life as she grows older. Jane divulged: “I know if I hadn’t have left now I never would. “Life is such an exciting thing, you never know what is around the corner. It was a big decision but I know it is the right thing.”

The actress added to Mirror Online: “It is completely life-changing. But I decided I wanted to do different things.

“My mum died a couple of years ago, so it does make you think a lot about the big things in life. As you get older life feels shorter – although of course I am going to live to 150!”

Jane also admitted the busy work schedule she dealt with while filming Emmerdale was a contributing factor to her decision to leave.

She told the publication: “It is long, long days and then you don’t have time in the evening because you have lines to learn for the next day.”

Speaking about her upcoming time off, the Emmerdale favourite revealed she is planning to “explore” other things in life.

She added: “I decided that this is going to be my time to do things I didn’t have time to do. I still feel about 20-odd, but in 20 years I will be 87, and there are other things in life that I want to explore.”

Jane finally took the opportunity to pay tribute to her role as Lisa on the show, who she claims is relatable for many women.

The soap star gushed: “There are so many women out there that we know like Lisa Dingle, who are trying to juggle everything.

“They manage to retain a sense of humour but they look a bit careworn.

“These women know how to have a laugh but they have great strength and I salute them. Austerity is something a lot of people have to deal with every day.”

Jane’s exit from the ITV series has now been written into the storyline, as viewers discovered her character Lisa is dying from terminal cancer.

The matriarch is set to marry Zak again in this week’s episodes, commemorating their relationship for the final time.

Lisa discussed the surprising plot twist in an interview with the TV Times.

She admitted: “It was a curveball, wasn’t it?

“But I’m so glad they’re back together; that’s the important thing.

“I think she should always have been his wife, and the fact that they’re marrying again is something the audience want.”

Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
