Alexander Armstrong: Pointless presenter addresses ‘RUINING’ BBC show

The 49-year-old Pointless favourite was joined by his co-star Richard Osman, 48, for a special one-off instalment which featured outtakes and some of the funnier answers contestants have given in the past. Taking to Twitter to comment on the episode, Alexander Armstrong joked about “ruining” the BBC series in view of his 407,000 followers. “Hope you enjoyed watching #PointlessBloopers as much as Richard I enjoyed RUINING the show,” he quipped. Fans flooded the replies with comments about how entertaining the bloopers episode had been.

“It’s so funny! Loved the Pointless answer which was about you!” one said, while another added: “The bloopers show was very funny. Tears rolling down cheeks.”

“Really enjoyed the prog but you forgot my all time favourite when, looking for a famous William, someone said William Tell wrote Hamlet,” a third commented, as a fourth chipped in: “Very much enjoyed it. Especially the bloopers. Here’s to many more years of #Pointless answers.”

The programme saw Alexander and Richard looking back over the past 10 years on the show.

It featured Alexander fluffing his lines, one contestant telling Richard to “shut up” and the moment a woman on the show told the former she was going to “give him three children”.

One particularly hilarious incident occurred when one helpless contestant was attempting to come up with an answer from the list of of The Dirty Dozen or The Magnificent Seven actors.

“I’m going to have to have a very random guess,” she said, clearly taking a stab in the dark. “And go for James Brown.”

Pursing his lips as he tried to stop himself bursting out laughing, Alexander turned slowly to Richard.

“That would have been funny,” he said. “It needed a funk soundtrack, definitely.”

However, unexpectedly, James Brown was in fact correct, even scoring the contestant a pointless answer.

She took a bow, as Alexander exclaimed: “What?!”

“I’ve seen some luck in my time on this show, I really have,” Richard said, shaking his head in disbelief.

“James Brown the soul singer wasn’t in the film but there is an old American actor called Jim Brown, his real name is James Nathaniel Brown, and he was in The Dirty Dozen.”

Alexander and Richards have presented Pointless since it first aired in 2009.

The format of the game show sees contestants, in pairs, try to come up with the least popular answer to general knowledge questions.

To date, there have been 19 series of the long-running quiz.

Pointless airs weekdays at 5.15pm on BBC One.
