UK weather forecast – Brits to bask in sunshine and 21C in Good Friday scorcher and it’s going to get even hotter

BRITS will bask in sunshine and highs of 21C in a Good Friday scorcher today before it gets even hotter over the weekend.

The Met Office said any morning fog would clear swiftly so long spells of sunshine can break through.

There could be some light showers in central, southern, eastern Scotland and northern England – but most of the country will stay dry.

Manchester, Brighton, Cardiff and Southampton are all expected to see highs of 21C for the start of the Easter weekend.

And the mercury will rise even higher in time for Easter Sunday – which is expected to be the hottest in 178 years.

Places such as pottery capital Stoke-on-Trent will bask in sunshine as warm air from Greece pushes in.

The Midlands city could hit 25C while southern California will peak at a moderate 19C.

Forecasters think the UK’s Easter Sunday record — 25.3C set in 2011 — will be smashed.

But temperatures won’t quite match the hottest ever Easter weekend — 29.4C on the Saturday in 1949.

This week sun worshippers across Britain have been enjoying a warm spell, including Siobhan Graves, 25, in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. Average April temperatures are 11.4C.

But changes to the Jet Stream, which usually brings weather in from the west, means Britain will boil.

The hottest day of the year — February 26's 21.2C at Kew, London — will also be smashed this weekend.

POTTERIES HOTTER THAN CALIFORNIA

Supermarkets are bracing for a BBQ food rush. Asda is expecting to sell close to 750,000 burgers and 350,000 sausages. Sainsbury's is set to see ice lolly sales quadruple.

But day-trippers will clog roads, with traffic jams due on coastal routes including the A23 to Brighton, A31 to Dorset, A30 to Cornwall and M55 to Blackpool.

Bank Holiday Monday is set to push 24C, with similar highs until Wednesday.

Met Office forecaster Richard Miles said: "It's very likely the record for hottest-ever Easter Sunday will be broken this year.

"In fact, we're in for a very fine bank holiday thanks to an area of high pressure sitting right above us.

"The high pressure and clear skies will allow the sun to heat the ground and atmosphere. It will warm up consistently until that pressure system moves.

"Temperatures will be way above average. At the moment, it looks like we'll have this nice weather until at least Wednesday."
