Has Loch Ness Monster mystery been SOLVED? Top military historian insists his photo of ‘bird-like’ creature with 4ft-long neck is the mythical beast

A respected military historian thinks an astonishing snap he took of a ‘bird-like creature’ with a 4ft neck could be proof that the Loch Ness Monster exists.

Ricky D Phillips, who is also a tour guide,  was leading a party of eight foreign tourists at  Loch Ness last Thursday when he took the stunning picture.

While they went on a cruse around 2pm he went for a walk along the river Oich and took the picture which appears to shows a creature he said has a head ‘the size of a rugby ball.’

Mr Phillips, 39, the best-selling author of warfare titles – including The First Casualty, told The Sun:  ‘It was a grey creature – almost bird-like – in a grey stretch of water.

‘Its neck was three to four feet long and had a head the size of a rugby ball and a ridge across its eyes. I was baffled.

‘I know dinosaurs came from birds and that many had hard lips, almost like a beak – but this is simply what I saw. It seems to have almost a frill on its neck. It is very odd.’

He explained that the previous Wednesday he ‘heard a strange noise’ as he was stood by a cafe at the edge of the loch in Fort Augustus.

He said ‘the noise sounded almost metallic, like something was blowing air – like Darth Vader’.

He said he had ‘swum and sailed with whales and dolphins and seen hundreds of seals’ but the sound ‘sounded like nothing he had ever heard’.

He added that last Thursday he decided to take a walk along the river Oich, mainly to see the old bridge when he saw the creature.

The Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register has accepted the image which has logged 11 sightings of the mythical beast this year.

Gary Campbell, the recorder and keeper of the register, said: ‘Mr Phillips is an experienced tour guide and historian who knows the area well and this gives it extra credibility.’

He added that sightings are now at a level that were being recorded in the 1990s and he believes ‘more visitors to the Highlands’ may have something to do with it.

Sightings and pictures of the Loch Ness Monster have baffled scientists for centuries.

Most sightings are of a long and thin creature that usually has green and with black humps, a tail and snake-like head.

The previous sighting of the Monster this year was recorded on November 22 by an American tourist who saw a dark green object protruding 4.5 feet above the water.
