Jodie Chesney stabbing – Man, 20, appears in court charged with murdering teenager in a London park

Manuel Petrovic, 20, was arrested in Leicester on Tuesday and appeared at Barkingside Magistrates' Court charged with killing the popular Girl Scout.

Jodie, 17, was stabbed near a children's play area at a park in Harold Hill, East London, last week.

Petrovic, of Romford, East London, wore a grey tracksuit as he confirmed his address, date of birth and Croatian nationality.
He did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody to next appear at the Old Bailey on March 11.

A second unnamed man arrested yesterday on suspicion of murder remains in custody, police said.

Jodie was sitting with her boyfriend and four other pals when she was stabbed once in the back last Friday, March 1.

Paramedics and neighbours battled to save her but she was pronounced dead at the scene around an hour later.

Hundreds took to the streets of Romford on Thursday night to pay tribute to Jodie.

The emotional march – which saw grieving friends, relatives and supporters wear purple – came after Jodie's distraught dad opened up about his anguish.

Appealing for information, tearful Peter Chesney said: “Someone knows who did this. Just do the right thing."

Jodie's death has added to growing calls for action to be taken to tackle soaring knife crime across the UK.
