U.S. citizen held in Yemen ‘recovered and reunited’ with his family announces Trump – who says freeing American hostages is one of his top priorities

President Trump said Monday, as he flew to a summit in Vietnam, that an American being held in Oman for the last year has been released from custody.

Trump said in several tweets that he sent from Air Force One that Burch had been ‘recovered and reunited with his wife and children’ with the help of the United Arab Emirates. 

‘Recovering American hostages is a priority of my Admin, and with Danny’s release, we have now secured freedom for 20 American captives since my election victory,’ Trump boasted. ‘We will not rest as we continue our work to bring the remaining American hostages back home!’

Trump will have access to the internet throughout the long-haul flight, meaning he could make any number of declarations while he’s in the air. He will not land until Tuesday

Burch had been taken captive in September 2017 by Houthi rebels in Yemen. The United States is backing Saudi Arabia in its war in the country against the Iran-supported rebels.

An employee of Yemeni Safer, he was taking his children to school when he was abducted.

In a formal statement, the president said: ‘It is my honor today to announce that Danny Burch, a United States citizen who has been held hostage in Yemen for 18 months, has been recovered and reunited with his wife and children. I appreciate the support of the United Arab Emirates in bringing Danny home. 

‘Danny’s recovery reflects the best of what the United States and its partners can accomplish. We work every day to bring Americans home. We maintain constant and intensive diplomatic, intelligence, and law enforcement cooperation within the United States Government and with our foreign partners. 

‘Recovering American hostages is a priority of my Administration, and with Danny’s release, we have now secured freedom for 20 American captives since my election victory. We will not rest as we continue our work to bring the remaining American hostages back home. Today, we join Danny and his family in celebrating his return.’ 

The president is holding a nuclear summit this week in Hanoi with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. He announced Burch’s release from the plane, nearly two hours into the flight.
