Hero doctor jumps in front of double-amputee shooter at VA hospital

A doctor is being hailed as a hero for throwing himself on a deranged double-amputee as he opened fire in a Florida veterans hospital.

The doctor was shot in the neck but managed to jump on the suspect, Larry Ray Bon, before he could do more harm Wednesday night in the emergency room of the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center, ABC News reported.

FBI assistant special agent in charge Justin Fleck called the doctor “very brave.”

“I’m not going to release his name at this time, but he’s doing well, and he did a heroic thing today,” said Fleck, who works out of the Miami field office. “Probably saved a lot of lives.”

Bon, 59, came to the Riviera Beach hospital for treatment but quickly went berserk on staffers.

He pulled out a small handgun from his electric wheelchair and began squeezing off shots when he was taken to the ER for a mental health evaluation around 6:20 p.m.

The doctor was transported to a nearby hospital “for further treatment and evaluation and is in stable condition,” a spokesperson for the US Department of Veteran Affairs said.

“No one else was harmed and the suspect is in law enforcement custody,” the spokesperson told ABC News in a statement. “The facility is secure and will remain operational for scheduled appointments and procedures tomorrow.”

Bon, who is missing both legs from the knee down, is from Michigan but recently was living in the West Palm Beach area. It’s not clear whether he’s a veteran.

Fleck said authorities believe he may be homeless.

“If anybody is familiar with him and can provide us any information about where he might be staying at, or some associates that could help us paint the picture of who he is, we’d appreciate a call into the FBI,” he said.
