Gunman opens fire at restaurant with Kalashnikov in Brussels

A gunman has opened fire at a restaurant in Brussels with a Kalashnikov.

The weapon was fired at 9.50am local time and the suspect fled the scene, according to reports.

Police said three bullets were shot through the window.

The shooting happened in the Belgian capital’s Avenue Louise – one of the main streets in the city centre. Photos from the scene suggest the target was La Parisienne restaurant.

Belgian newspaper Le Soir says there were no reports of injuries but the gunman remains at large.

Prosecutor’s office spokeswoman Ine Van Wymersch told the publication: "A witness saw a man shoot with a Kalashnikov-style weapon in the direction of the window of a restaurant on Avenue Louise.

"On the spot, the police found three bullet impacts. For now, we are not aware of any injuries."

The prosecutor’s office has sent a ballistics expert to the scene.

There is no clear motive at present but it is not believed to be terror-relatred.

The restaurant is believed to have been closed at the time of the attack.

The venue posted on Facebook around the time of the shooting to say it would be open later in the day.
