Father is stunned when he checks into Travelodge hotel room with son, eight, to find rolled-up bank note and lines of white powder in his room

A father was left stunned after checking into his Travelodge hotel room with his young son only to find a rolled up banknote and lines of white powder.

Jamie Spencer, from west London, was booked to stay at the Travelodge in Chichester, and walked into the room with his eight-year-old to find the unknown substance just before Christmas.

Mr Spencer claims the room was completely clean apart from the two white lines on the table and the rolled banknote.

He tweeted on December 22: ‘So just checked into @TravelodgeUK Chichester, walked into our room with our 8 year old son and found this…’

Mr Spencer approached reception about the state of his room and was given a refund and a new room. 

The Londoner also had to write to his son’s school to explain why he returned to the classroom talking about ‘illegal drugs.’

In further tweets he added he was ”very disappointed’ with the Travelodge response and in another hoped it would have been more ‘robust.’

He said: ‘Really surprised to see this in Chicester.

‘It needed a much more robust response from @TravelodgeUK’

He said: ‘Been very disappointed with @TravelodgeUK response.

‘Treated as if this was s dispute about a dirty sink.

‘We’ve emailed the CEO but no response.’

In a tweet responding to Mr Spencer, a spokesman tweeted: ‘Hi Jamie, your contact has been received and investigated and we can see that this is in the hands of the CEO’s office who will get back to you as soon as possible- Charley.’

A spokesman for Travelodge was contacted by MailOnline and provided an additional comment.

The statement said: ‘We would like to sincerely apologise to the Spencer family for the unfortunate and regrettable incident that took place when they checked into one of our hotels.

‘The safety of our customers and colleagues is of the utmost importance to us and we are currently undertaking a comprehensive investigation into this matter. 

‘We have also been in contact with Mr Spencer and we will continue to liaise with him and with other authorities as appropriate.’
