Facebook spends £17.2million on security for Mark Zuckerberg

FACEBOOK spent £17.2million to keep chief Mark Zuckerberg safe, reports have revealed.

Almost £15.2million went towards personally protecting Zuckerberg and his family.

And the extra £2million funded his personal use of private jets.

The £17.2million is four times the amount he received for security in 2016.

He received them on top of his base salary of 76 pence, which he received over the last three years.

Defending the payments, a regulatory filing from Facebook said: "He is synonymous with Facebook and, as a result, negative sentiment regarding our company is directly associated with, and often transferred to, Mr Zuckerberg."

His boost in security sums comes after the social media giant suffered a turbulent year of scandals.

'HE IS FACEBOOK'

Facebook has recently been blasted for its role in Russia's alleged influence on the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

And it has come under fire following revelations that Cambridge Analytica obtained personal data from millions of Facebook profiles without consent.

Last week, Zuckerberg told politicians in Ireland that the company would work with governments to establish new policies in a bid to regulate social media.

His promise followed warnings from Brit MPS that social media companies will soon be legally required to protect their users

Facebook's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg saw her a cut in her pay, taking home £18.1 compared to £19.2 last year.
