Derby fire – Explosions at huge factory blaze spark evacuations as residents 'feeling unwell' told to phone 999

HUGE explosions rocked a factory in Derby today sparking a blaze as residents "feeling unwell" were told to call 999.

Bank Holidaymakers were plunged into travel chaos caused by the fire after it erupted by a train track near the town’s station.

East Midlands Trains said routes into London, Nottingham and Sheffield have been "disrupted" by the blaze.

Roads were also shut off as thick black smoke billowed across Derby as locals were told to keep their windows closed.

Firefighters were scrambled to tackle a fire which erupted at a factory on Enterprise Way in the city.

A Derbyshire Police spokesperson said: "St Mary's Wharf police station in Prime Park Way, Derby has been evacuated due to a large fire at a business premises on Chester Green, which has resulted in a series of explosions.

"An investigation is under way as to the cause of the fire, but it is not thought to be suspicious at this time.

"Please avoid the area. There are road closures in place at Prime Park Way, Stores Road to the junction with the Vauxhall garage, and Mansfield Road to the junction with Alfreton road.

"Local residents are also advised to keep their doors and windows closed to reduce their contact with any fumes.

"No further information is available at this time."

Horrified locals told how their windows rattled after a number of explosions hit the city.

John Collins said: "Bonkers, I heard four massive booms in Derby at lunchtime.

"Thought my windows were going to cave in. Hope no one hurt. You can see smoke all over the city."

Adrian Mannion tweeted: "Goodness knows what just happened in Derby. Heard big explosion and loads of smoke."
