British Bolshoi Ballet star, 21, is ‘detained by police in Moscow on suspicion of possessing cocaine’

A British ballet star has been detained in Moscow on suspicion of possessing cocaine, according to reports.

Oscar Frame, 21, is a rising star of the world famous Bolshoi Ballet in Russia but has now been arrested, Russian media states.

The Bolshoi confirmed tonight that Moscow police had held the dancer but declined to give details. 

Pro-Kremlin media reports citing law enforcement sources alleged Frame had changed direction in the city when he saw a police patrol coming towards him.

‘They approached him and asked if he had drugs with him,’ stated REN TV.

‘He confessed he had cocaine.

‘And they found a package with something looking like cocaine.’

The alleged package was seized and has been sent for analysis, it was reported. 

Penalties for possession of drugs in Russia can be harsh and run between a 15 day arrest and a large fine, to years in prison.  

A Bolshoi spokeswoman said Moscow police had ‘detained’ the dancer but the troupe was ‘not yet commenting on this situation’ which was a matter for law enforcement. 

Police had informed the British Embassy after he was held, said reports in Moscow.

He was held at Khamovniki police station in Moscow, according to reports.

The dancer has enjoyed sensational success in Russia after completing his training at the Vaganova Ballet Academy in St Petersburg in 2017.

He was taught by legendary Bolshoi star Nikolay Tsiskaridze.

One account in melmoth.blog said: ‘Oscar Frame found himself in a difficult, albeit enviable, position.

‘The young Brit received job offers from both the Mariinsky and the Bolshoi – a happy predicament very few Vaganova graduates, let alone foreign trainees, ever find themselves facing.

‘After some deliberation, Frame settled on the Bolshoi, becoming one of the few foreigners to ever join the company.’

He said: ‘My dream role at the moment is Romeo because I’d really like to try and conquer it, and it feels as if it fits my abilities on stage.:

He was born in Southwark in 1997 and trained at the Hampton Ballet Academy in London before winning a scholarship to the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington.

He was twice rejected by the Royal Ballet Junior Associates, he said.

Mr Frame has been taught by legendary Bolshoi star Nikolay Tsiskaridze in Moscow 

‘My interest in ballet only really sparked when I started the Russian training,’ he said.

‘After that, nothing really got to me except the Vaganova classes.

‘It was addictive.’

He said: ‘I spoke no Russian before I left England.

‘It was easy to pick up because I ended up being the only international student in my class.’ Neither Frame nor his legal representative has commented. 

Moscow police had issued no statement on the case.

It is understood British diplomats have been in touch with the Russian authorities.
