  • Angela Merkel’s plane was dented by a worker at Dortmund Airport in Germany
  • The excited fan spotted the aircraft and jumped out of the vehicle to take a photo
  • Van rolled forward causing a dent and forcing Ms Merkel to be delayed to Berlin

Angela Merkel’s plane was left dented by an over-excited fan who left the handbrake off her van as it rolled forward.

The woman, who worked at Dortmund Airport in Germany, had been driving when she spotted the German Chancellor’s aircraft and jumped out her vehicle to take a photo.

But the van rolled into the plane’s nose causing a dent – forcing Ms Merkel to delay her return to Berlin, Der Spiegel reports.

The over-eager fan had seen the the ‘Federal Republic of Germany’ sign on the side of the plane and forgot to pull the handbrake when she ran to take a snap.

The German Chancellor, who was not in the plane at the time, had to fly by helicopter while the damage was examined.

Photos posted by Der Spiegel show a red van underneath the Global 5000 jet, which was gorunded following the low-speed collision.

Ms Merkel, who was travelling back from visiting Junior University in Wuppertal, close to Dortmund, was actually not at the airport at the time of the crash.

The accident comes as Ms Merkel has seen a number of highly publicised breakdowns of planes causing delays, as well as shortages of aircrafts around the country.
