When Will the Golden Globes Air in 2019?
Hollywood awards season kicked off on Thursday with the announcement of this year’s Golden Globe nominations.
Vice, a biopic about Dick Cheney starring Christian Bale, led the pack with six nominations, including best motion picture (musical or comedy), best actor for Bale, and best supporting actress for Amy Adams. A Star Is Born, The Favourite, and Green Book also earned multiple nominations, as did TV shows like The Assassination of Gianni Versace, Sharp Objects, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

You can find out who the big winners are at the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards, which will air Sunday, January 6, 2019, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC, with a live, three-hour broadcast of the ceremony from The Beverly Hilton. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association will hand out awards in 25 categories (14 in film, 11 in television) at an event that is sometimes called “Hollywood’s Party of the Year.”
Who will host the 2019 Golden Globes?
This year’s Golden Globes hosts are Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh. Both have taken home trophies at the ceremony in the past. Samberg won two Golden Globes in 2014 for his work as an actor and a producer on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Oh won a best actress Golden Globe in 2006 for her performance on Grey’s Anatomy.
Neither Samberg nor Oh has hosted the Golden Globes before. But Samberg isn’t new to hosting an awards show. He hosted the Emmys in 2015 and the Film Independent Spirit Awards in 2013. Seth Meyers hosted the ceremony in 2018.
Who are this year’s Golden Globe nominees?

This year’s Golden Globe nominations included a few surprises – and a few snubs. Black Panther earned a nod for best drama. The Marvel movie was critically acclaimed, but not everyone believed it would be a contender for major awards. But director Ryan Coogler didn’t get a nomination. Nor did Moonlight director Barry Jenkins get a nomination for his new movie, If Beale Street Could Talk. (It was nominated for best picture, though.)
Sacha Baron Cohen was also nominated for his series Who Is America? The show wasn’t exactly a critical darling, but the HFPA nominated Cohen for best actor in a comedy.
Several well-regarded movies failed to get any recognition from the HFPA, including Steve McQueen’s Widows, Paul Schrader’s First Reformed, and Chloe Zhao’s The Rider. On the TV front, This Is Us was completely ignored. So were Better Call Saul, Black-ish, Maniac, and The Little Drummer Girl.
Once again, female directors didn’t get any nominations this year, despite star Natalie Portman’s criticizing the HFPA for ignoring women behind the camera when she announced the 2017 nominees. Several women were on people’s lists of best director contenders, including Zhao, Lynne Ramsay (who directed You Were Never Really Here), Can You Ever Forgive Me?’s Marielle Heller, and Josie Rourke for Mary, Queen of Scots. Only five women have ever been nominated for best director in the 76-year history of the Golden Globes – Barbra Streisand, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, Ava DuVernay, and Kathryn Bigelow. Streisand is the only one to win, for Yentl in 1984.
