The Marvel Cinematic Universe has gotten pretty big and it’s only getting bigger. That’s because the Avengers need even more help to defeat Thanos. The person for the job will most likely be Captain Marvel, who is getting her own movie right before Avengers 4. But those who aren’t familiar with the comics might wonder if the character’s name makes her similar to Captain America. What is the difference between the characters? Here is everything you need to know.

Captain America is a super soldier but doesn’t have superpowers

Captain America or Steve Rogers, portrayed by Chris Evans in the MCU, started out in the military in World War II. He was turned into a super soldier through a serum. This gave him heightened strength, speed, endurance and more. However, he doesn’t have superpowers. He uses his heightened abilities through martial arts and other forms of combat.

Another obvious difference between Captain America and Captain Marvel is their time in the cinematic universe. Chris Evans has played Captain America since 2011 in Captain America: The First Avenger. When he finished filming Avengers 4, he pretty much announced that he is done playing the character.

Evans tweeted, “Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”

This is not that shocking considering multiple other characters eventually take on the role of Captain America. Captain Marvel, on the other hand, is about to make her first appearance on the big screen in Captain Marvel. Her powers and origin story also set her apart from Captain America.

Captain Marvel or Carol Danvers, portrayed by Brie Larson, was in the Air Force then the Air Force Intelligence. There she meets an alien of the Kree Empire named Mar-Vell. In an explosion, her DNA gets fused with Mar-Vell’s, which makes her become Captain Marvel with her powers.

Those powers also include super strength and a limited precognitive “sixth sense.” She is also immune to most toxins and poisons. Larson talked about the importance of Carol’s Air Force experience is to the character. “The things that I thought were just innately Carol were actually, a huge piece of it, is her background in the Air Force,” she said according to Mashable.

She expanded on those qualities with “And just this great combination of really confident, super humble, not boastful. You just feel the power being with them, and they’re hyper-intelligent and just badasses.”

So Captain America and Captain Marvel got their powers in very different ways and have different powers. One of the roles also will probably be changing hands very soon on the big screen.
