'Sex and the City' Fans Can Rejoice: Candace Bushnell is Set to Tell Another Sexy Tale

Kim Cattrall may have nixed the third Sex and the City movie, but that won’t keep Candace Bushnell down. The famed author of Sex and the City, Lipstick Jungle and The Carrie Diaries has another book whose rights were just purchased to be turned into a television series; and it’s closer to Sex and the City than you might think.

What is Is There Still Sex in the City? about?

The book, which is expected to be released 2019, takes readers back to Bushnell’s roots. The seasoned writer (and dater) is back to tell readers what it’s really like to love and date in Manhattan as a middle-aged woman. According to Deadline, the book (and presumably the TV adaptation) will follow the lives of several women as they navigate the ubiquitous Manhattan dating rituals of the Upper East Side elite.

Instead of following 30-somethings who are still trying to figure it out; Is There Still Sex in the City? will follow the lives of several women in their 50s who have found themselves, for one reason or another back, on the dating market. Set up as a collection of essays, Bushnell appears to be on a mission to demystify a relatively new class of daters; the middle-aged woman who prefers an apple martini to an early bird special.

Is the world ready to discuss dating after 50?

Bushnell’s book and Paramount TV’s commitment to bringing it to the screen should come as no surprise; in recent years several shows have begun focusing on the mostly underrepresented population of older, single women. Netflix’s Gracie and Frankie follows the trials and tribulations of Grace, played by Jane Fonda, and Frankie, played by Lily Tomlin as they navigate divorce and the revelation that their partners of 40 years are gay. Cougar Town, which ran for six seasons, explored life after divorce for Jules Cobbs, played by Courtney Cox.

Bushnell’s story, if its anything like Sex and the City, will be raunchier, funnier and more groundbreaking than previous shows that have dealt with the topic. Bushnell’s work, according to the publisher, also has a heavy focus on friendship and how women over 50 interact with each other.

When will the series air?

Fans of the original Sex and the City will be waiting a while to settle down with an entirely new crowd of best friends, according to Vanity Fair. The book’s release is still several months away, which means a TV adaptation is probably at least a year or more out.

While the project is in the pipeline and Paramount TV is excited to see it produced, there is no network signed onto the series just yet. Fans can’t help but wonder if HBO will pick up on Bushnell’s story were they left off, or if the show will find its home on streaming service like Netflix. Only time will tell.
