Oscars Will Reportedly Assemble the Avengers to Beef Up Ceremony That Still Has No Host
“Avengers: Endgame” hits theaters on April 26, and the cast are not strangers to the Academy.
The Oscars may be getting some superpower in lieu of a famous comedian to host it.
The Hollywood Reporter published an article Thursday claiming producers of the upcoming Academy Awards telecast are scrambling to get as many stars from the "Avengers" franchise as they can to appear on stage at some point.
Sources told THR that the show that several "Avengers" stars were asked not to present at last Sunday’s Golden Globes so that they’re appearance at the Oscars could be more impactful for fans of the franchise.
The development follows Variety reporting on Wednesday that the Feb. 24 ceremony will not have a host at all following the Kevin Hart mess. If that’s true, expect the lineup of celebrity presenters to do a lot more than just list nominees and announce the winner.
After the blockbuster success of the first "Avengers" film in 2012, the 2013 Oscars did a bit with Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/The Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) assembling on stage.
All of those actors are still involved in the franchise, but Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe has had a lot of additions since, including more women in the lineup, so producers have no shortage of Avengers to choose from. The third installment, last year’s "Avengers: Infinity War," featured a whopping 40 Marvel characters, according to Screencrush.
The fourth and final film of the superhero franchise, "Avengers: Endgame," is out April 26, so it’s a huge prime-time opportunity to promote it on ABC, a TV network Disney owns.
