Norah O'Donnell Calls Trump Tweets 'Racist' in 'CBS Evening News' Debut (Video)

CBS joins growing list of outlets calling tweets aimed at Democratic congresswomen as “racist”

In her debut as anchor of the “CBS Evening News” Monday, Norah O’Donnell described President Trump’s recent tweets attacking four Democratic congresswomen as “racist.”

“We begin with breaking news in Washington,” O’Donnell reported. “Four Democratic congresswomen of color have just spoken publicly as a group for the first time about the racist tweets aimed at them by the President of the United States.”

She went on to say that Trump doubled down on his comments about Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, “again inviting these congresswomen to leave the country.” Further, she said, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with her leadership team Monday night to discuss a resolution denouncing the president’s language while Republican House leadership had “been noticeably silent.”

Some outlets, like CNN, branded the tweets, which encouraged the representatives to “go back” to the countries of their ethnic origins, with the “racist” label immediately Sunday while others reported critics or Democrats were calling them that.

CBS even put the descriptor in their chyrons: “Pres. Trump Defends Racist Tweets,” and “Congresswomen Respond to Racist Tweets.”

At TheWrap’s Power Women Breakfast last week, O’Donnell praised her employer, saying, “At CBS, we’re focused on the truth. We’re focused on the facts. That still matters and is still important.”
