Line of Duty season 5, episode 6 ending explained: What happened?

Season five, episode six of Line of Duty saw the truth finally emerge about H as new villains were exposed during the course of the feature-length episode. As always, there were plenty of shocks and twists to keep fans glued to their seats until the very end. Here’s our breakdown of the Line of Duty season five finale with all the key details from the instalment.

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Line of Duty season 5

H reveal and the four Caddy theory

In a strange turn of events, H was apparently not a person after all but four Caddies within the police force who were behind the corruption.

Kate Fleming (played by Vicky McClure) seemed to reach this conclusion after she and Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) re-watched the footage of Matthew “Dot” Cottan/The Caddy’s (Craig Parkinson) dying declaration.

According to Kate, Dot seemed to be sending a message via Morse Code using his hands in which he was gesturing “dot-dot-dot-dot” which referred to four Caddies within the police force rather than H.

Cottan, Derek Hilton (Paul Higgins) and Gill Biggeloe (Polly Walker) were revealed to the three Caddies but there was a fourth still in embedded in the force.

Season six is likely to see AC-12 trying to find the fourth Caddy working within the force but there are still questions over who is still at the top of the chain.

WILL THERE BE ANOTHER SERIES OF LINE OF DUTY?

Hastings

Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) was finally exonerated and found to not be H.

Patricia Carmichael’s (Anna Maxwell Martin) case against him fell apart after Gill’s complicity was revealed by Steve and Kate.

He is still in charge of AC-12 as they continue their operations into police corruption.

Steve Arnott

Steve and Kate were working together to find out what really happened and if Hastings was guilty.

They both discovered Gill had recruited John Corbett (Stephen Graham) to prove Hastings was H.

The episode saw Steve having to critically shoot a police officer in order to stop her from murdering Gill.

However, he was left deeply disturbed by shooting a person for the first time.

Steve appeared to have become addicted to prescription pain killers from the back injuries he sustained in season four.

HOW MANY EPISODES ARE IN LINE OF DUTY SEASON 5?

Kate Fleming

Kate and Steve spent the episode discovering the truth about Gill and rushing back to AC-12 to take the information to Carmichael.

Together with Steve, they also seemed to establish the four Caddy theory which appeared to debunk the whole H conspiracy.

She was highly commended for efforts on Operation Peartree but sadly her personal life was in disarray as it seemed like her partner and kids had gone to the cinema without her.

John Corbett

John was recruited to be the undercover officer in Operation Peartree by Gill, who had told him Hastings was H.

He had also been convinced that Hastings was the officer responsible for his mother Anne-Marie McGillis’ death back in Northern Ireland 30 years ago.

John had died thinking he was going to get revenge on the man who’d killed his mother when he was simply a pawn.

DOT’S DYING DECLARATION EXPLAINED

Gill Biggeloe

Gill was exposed as the third Caddy. Just like Dot, Gill called for help but this time no one came to save her.

She admitted to her duplicity as she was led away by the police but managed to make a deal with her superiors.

By the end of the episode, Gill was in witness protection and her whereabouts were unknown.

Lisa McQueen

OCG operative Lisa McQueen (Rochenda Sandall) managed to broker a deal as she avoided too much time in jail.

Instead, she was now apparently teaching youngsters about the perils of crime. But you got the sense she could simply be recruiting more impressionable teens to join the OCG, just like she was.

Ryan Pilkington

Former OCG member Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper) joined the police force as the cycle of institutional corruption seemed to continue.

Pilkington was seen marching with other officers as he started his training.

As eagle-eyed Line of Duty fans will know, Pilkington was in season one – played by the same actor – acting as a runner for crime lord Tommy Hunter (Brian McCardie).
