Jax Taylor Responds to 'Vanderpump Rules' Backlash: 'This Scene Was Edited Horribly'
Jax says that in all seven years of filming the show, he’s “never once complained about editing;” however, he felt cheated when he saw what aired Monday night.
Jax Taylor appeared to say all the wrong things to his fiancée’s family on Monday’s episode of "Vanderpump Rules," and his defense is simple: bad editing.
During the scene in question, Jax went to dinner with some of the men of Brittany Cartwright’s family, where he seemed to make little-to-no attempts to reassure them he was a different man from the one who cheated on their princess last year. He also boldly proclaimed he would always put himself first — a comment he addressed on Instagram immediately after the uncomfortable dinner aired.
"For those of you who want to come at me for tonight’s dinner scene: First of all, yes — mentally, I have to put myself first, or I won’t be able to take care of my wife or my kids. That is what I meant by that," he explained, adding that he felt "most" people "got that."
"I wouldn’t be making these moves forward and say something so selfish," he continued. "I believe everyone needs to put themselves first, or how can I possibly be good for anyone?"
Jax went on to say that in all seven years of filming the Bravo reality show, he’s "never once complained about editing;" however, he felt cheated when he saw what aired Monday night.
"This scene was edited horribly," he maintained. "I even spoke to [Brittany’s] father after, and he was like, ‘This is not how it went.’ We are both on the same page — just so you know — and he agrees with me, and that’s all that matters. Wanted to clear that up. I feel I owe it to you guys (viewers). I don’t want to let anyone down ever again."
In his lengthy explanation, Jax left out a plethora of other cringe-worthy moments from his televised chat with Britt’s dad and brothers.

Here’s everything else that went down…
"This is what gets me about it," Brittany’s dad, Don, said to Jax when everyone first sat down. "You sent that picture, and she was grinning from ear to ear with that ring on her finger, and that seems real important to her — that big rock and everything, and everybody was all excited about that. But what’s important to me is the faithfulness behind it. That’s the most important thing. The rock don’t mean anything."
Jax huffed and puffed and rolled his eyes during a later confessional, but he kept most of that to himself in front of Brittany’s family.
"It’s terrible that it took my dad to pass for me to figure all this shit out," Jax replied.
"I know you lost your dad, but you screwed up royally, and it didn’t please me at all," Don said sternly.
"I was going through my own personal issues when I did what I did," Jax explained before reassuring Mr. Cartwright he was trying his best.
One of Brittany’s brothers, Austin, interjected, "Talking to Brittany, she seems to really care about you. Don’t know why after all you’ve done to her, but if you do screw up, your life will be a living hell."
Another brother, Wes, asked Jax if he had gotten everyone’s blessing to marry Brittany, adding, "I want you to love and cherish her the way my family loves and cherishes her."
"But can she love and cherish me?" Jax actually replied.
"I think she does," Wes said.
"Sometimes," Jax replied as he rolled his eyes and took a big bite of his food. He later vented to the camera, "I don’t know what decade they’re living in. That’s maybe the way they live in Kentucky in that small neck of the woods, maybe that’s how they do things. Always take care of your spouse? What about making me happy? You also gotta take care of your husband."
Wes also urged Jax to pay attention to his tone when speaking to Brittany.
Taking another big bite of his food, Jax replied, "That’s a hard thing for me because I always have to have the last word."
"Again, I love Brittany more than anything, but I gotta take care of this guy right here first," he added, putting his fist to his chest. "I’m always gonna be No. 1."
"Vanderpump Rules" airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on Bravo.
