‘It hurts me so much’: Constance Hall targeted by trolls after reality TV announcement

West Australian blogger Constance Hall has taken a stand against online bullies who've targeted her since news of her casting on Dancing With the Stars broke last week.

In a lengthy video shared to Facebook, Hall – who has long polarised followers with her outspoken nature and alternative lifestyle – detailed the effect social media haters have had on her in the past, in a bid to urge people to be kinder to one another and stop the normalising of bullying behaviour.

Describing herself as "completely shattered" thanks to Dancing's six-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week rehearsal schedule, Hall says the vitriol she's received increased enormously as soon as news got out that she'd be on the show. And that's nothing new for her.

"Anytime I'm in the media the trolling starts, whether it's a pregnancy or a wedding or a blog that I'd written – the trolling is always there," she says. "It's usually the same old s— but I think people might have thought I was on my high horse.

"You know like with tall poppy syndrome, I think they might have thought that I thought that I was a big success now that I'm on Dancing With the Stars. They really wanted to knock me off that pedestal; they definitely upped the ante."

While Hall's tendency to incite hatred is something of a mystery to her, she is firm in her belief that as a woman with an opinion, she was "already screwed".

"There are just so many things that ruffle people's feathers," she says. "Everybody has different reasons for hating on me.

"If I didn't have the following that I have, I wouldn't have the hatred that I have. But it's not just that because there are big, big stars – actual stars – who don't get as much hatred as me. I just really rub people up the wrong way for some reason."

While it remains to be seen if her haters will take heed of her video and her message for people to "just be f—ing kind", Hall said the abuse – and the realisation that many children face the same treatment – has made her more determined than ever to succeed.

"Rather than backing out of Dancing With the Stars and letting the fear get to me, I thought, 'f—, these kids can't back out of anything. I'm going to do it and I'm going to show them'.

"I would love these young kids to have a look at me and go, 'Wow, no one hates me as much as they hate her'. With any luck, that will get through to some people."

The new season of Dancing With the Stars will premiere at 7:30pm on Monday, February 18, on Network 10.
