How Did Captain Marvel Find Tony Stark in Space in Endgame?

Full spoilers follow for Avenger: Endgame, so jump on the Benatar and get out of here if you haven’t seen the movie yet!

Early on in Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark and Nebula are lost in space, adrift on the Benatar. As the only survivors (not including Thanos) of the battle on Titan in Infinity War, they have managed to make it off that world in an attempt to get back to Earth. But with no fuel, no food, no water, and soon, no air, things are looking dire. Tony Stark records a message for Pepper Potts via his Iron Man helmet, but he doesn’t even know if she can receive it because, you know, outer space. And then, just when all hope seems lost and Tony appears to be almost dead, Captain Marvel shows up and flies them home!

But how did she find them? Well, it seems that the end credits scene from Captain Marvel’s movie — where Carol first met the Avengers at their headquarters after responding to Nick Fury’s signal — took place offscreen in Endgame. With an already three-hour running time, why rehash that stuff anyway? So after Carol explained who she was, and the Avengers explained who they are, and everyone decided they could be friends, perhaps the Avengers (and mainly the more cosmic-minded Rocket and Thor, probably) were able to direct Carol to where they thought Tony might be lost… “on the way back from Titan” let’s call it.

Though that raises the question of how they knew Tony and Nebula had been on Titan. All that the surviving Avengers really knew was that Tony had disappeared after the Black Order had invaded Earth in Infinity War. But it could be that since they were fighting Thanos, Thor and Rocket were able to piece things together and say “maybe check over by Titan.” Indeed, perhaps Carol Danvers herself also knew of Thanos and had a good sense where to look.

But barring that, it could be that Pepper Potts back on Earth in fact was receiving those signals from Tony’s helmet that he was recording. And those lovey-dovey messages might’ve served as a beacon of sorts for Captain Marvel to track down Iron Man and Nebula. Surely, Tony would’ve preferred to be discovered in a better groomed state. But hey, it beats suffocating in the deep expanse of space!
