Game of Thrones season 8: Boss hints Naomi Watts prequel could be dropped ‘Is it worthy?’

The Game of Thrones season 8 premiere saw the show receive its largest viewing figures since the inception of the HBO drama series.

A whopping 17.4 million people tuned in to watch the first episode of the final series when it aired on Sunday night (April 14).

However, fans have less than a dozen shows to go before the season is up and a prequel takes it place.

Creators announced last year there would be working on a new project starring Naomi Watts, with filming set to begin in June.

But HBO boss Bob Greenblatt has admitted he is cautious about “killing the golden goose” as he spoke about the upcoming production.

“There’s a prequel in production, but just a pilot so that we can see if it has all the goods and is it worthy of going forward,” he said.

In an interview with Deadline, he added: “We’re just trying to be really thoughtful about how to expand this universe if it makes sense, and not, like I said, kill the golden goose.

“We’re having conversations about how do we smartly continue the Game Of Thrones universe.

“But we have to be really thoughtful about not killing the golden goose and not putting on shows that aren’t up to that quality level and how many is too many.”

He continued: “We’re having all those conversations. I don’t know yet what will come of all this material.”

Nevertheless, the boss concluded by shining some positivity on the matter, as he teased the new prospect, gushing about “good ideas”.

“I think they’ve been smartly developing things that were really good ideas in this universe,” he finished.

Elsewhere, Game of Thrones cast member Kit Harington opened up about a rather gruelling filming session for the final series.

The 32-year-old actor, who plays Jon Snow in the show, revealed he almost crushed his manhood shooting a scene on a flying mechanical dragon.

Recounting the moment he was swung around by his testicles filming the dramatic moment, he quipped: “Buck work is not easy.”

Speaking in a behind-the-scenes clip for Game Revealed, he added: “I think what sums up the buck for me was there was a bit where Jon almost falls off [the dragon].

“It swings round really violently and my right ball got trapped and I didn’t have time to say stop and I was being swung round,” he added.

“In my head I thought, ‘This is how it ends, on this buck swinging me round by my testicles’. Literally.”

The award-winning actor concluded: “Probably too much information.”

Game of Thrones continues Sunday on HBO in the US and the following day on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
