Emmerdale's paedophile storyline to take dark turn as David Metcalfe discovers Maya's vile abuse, reveals Matthew Wolfenden

EMMERDALE'S controversial paedophile abuse storyline is going to take an even darker turn, Matthew Wolfenden has revealed.

The actor – who plays David Metcalfe in the ITV soap – revealed things are about to get a lot darker for him as David realises what is happening to his schoolboy son Jacob.

Viewers have watched as David's girlfriend Maya has groomed and abused his young son with increasing horror and discomfort.

But now Matthew has revealed it will soon be at an end as he told how David finds out about the disgusting abuse.

He told OK!: "At the moment for me it’s not too difficult as David doesn’t have a clue that it’s going on behind his back.

"He's naive to it and he thinks his relationship is going really well, but I’ve just read some scripts of when things take a turn for the worst and that will all be quite emotional.

"That’s when it’s going to be difficult for me.

"The storyline’s set to get darker which will be hard to play, particularly because I’m a dad."

Matthew's character David has come under increasing criticism from viewers for having no idea about the sexual abuse his son is suffering.

There have been multiple clues about what Maya has been doing but he has ignored them all, and the backlash has forced Emmerdale boss Kate Brooks to insist the storyline will end properly.

She said: "We’ve got a responsibility. A lot of people watch the show, a lot of teenagers watch the show, and also we would never just tell one of these stories lightly. We have a duty to make sure the right protocol is carried out, and the right outcome.

"It can make for uncomfortable viewing but I think it’s a really important storyline to tell."

She added: "There’s still a long way to go, it’s not going to be as straightforward as you’d imagine, there’s going to be other obstacles thrown into the mix.

"We want people to be yelling at the TV 'please tell somebody. This is not right! You’re a young lad. please speak out about this'"
