Emmerdale character Nicola King (played by Nicola Wheeler) is running for local councillor against Hilary Benshaw (Gabrielle Glaister) and will come face-to-face with her political opponent in tonight’s episode of the ITV soap (Thursday, May 2). Nicola is partially paralysed and unable to lift her right arm and hopes the disability will play to her advantage in her campaign to be elected over Hilary. Here’s what happened to Nicola King’s arm on Emmerdale and why she can’t move it.

What happened to Nicola’s arm on Emmerdale?

Nicola is unable to lift her right arm after being left partially paralysed following the collapse of Mill Cottage in 2016.

Emmerdale fans watched in horror as Nicola was trapped inside Mill Cottage while the building was ablaze.

The fire was caused by Rakesh Kotecha (Pasha Bocarie) which led to an explosion.

ITV viewers saw Ronnie Hale (John McArdle) and Dan Spencer (Liam Fox) pull Nicola from the wreckage but and it wasn’t until the following day that the full force of the fire took effect.

WILL JOE TATE RETURN TO EMMERDALE?

Nicola collapsed in her home the next day due to the injuries on her brain.

The soap character was rushed to the hospital where she underwent a brain operation.

Following tests and operations, it was revealed Nicola couldn’t feel her right leg or arm after suffering brain damage on one side of her head.

Nicola struggled to adapt to her new way of life, collapsing in the hospital only to be found by Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy).

Two years later, however, and Nicola is making progress with her arm thanks to her physio work.

Whether she’ll land the role of local councillor on the ITV soap will be revealed later this year.

Nicola’s going head-to-head with new Emmerdale cast member Hilary Benshaw.

WILL CAIN AND MOIRA SPLIT UP ON EMMERDALE?

Hilary’s introduction in Emmerdale is just one of a number of new cast members and characters brought in in 2019.

Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards) and Max (Jordan Reece) are just two other new Emmerdale cast members to debut alongside Hilary.

The likes of Will Taylor (Dean Andrews) and Natalie (Thea Beyleveld) also joined the ITV soap this year.

Nicola isn’t the only Emmerdale character to have suffered from health woes in recent weeks on the ITV soap.

Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) is feared to die on Emmerdale after being involved in a car crash with Jamie Tate (Alexander Lincoln).

Emmerdale legend Lisa Dingle (Jane Cox) revealed she is suffering from a terminal heart illness.

Cox will leave Emmerdale as a result of her character’s illness after 23 years on the soap.

Lisa’s departure has also led to fear her on-screen husband Zak Dingle (Steve Halliwell) could also leave.

THE DINGLE FAMILY TREE ON EMMERDALE EXPLAINED

Away from the Dingles, Emmerdale viewers have been gripped by a number of other dramatic storylines.

Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein) is tipped to be found out for her controversial romance with Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant).

Jacob and Maya’s age gap means the former was just 15 when they began their relationship.

There’s also the potential return from the dead for Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) in the coming months.

Kim Tate (Claire King) discovered he was alive meaning a return for the character is well and truly on the cards.
