Daniel Craig says he would welcome a woman playing Bond as he gears up for final outing as 007

DANIEL Craig has revealed that he WOULD welcome a woman taking over as James Bond.

The current 007, now starting on the franchise’s 25th film in Jamaica, said the “right person” – regardless of gender – should play the spy.

Craig, 51, also said that this latest Bond movie would be his last, even though producer Barbara Broccoli hopes he could return for another outing.

He said: “This is going to be my last Bond. I think I've done enough – people are going to get sick of the sight of me. Someone else should have a go.”

Craig’s hopes for a female Bond come after Broccoli abandoned a plot to build a 007 female series around Halle Berry's Jinx character from Die Another Day six years ago.

And in 2013 Broccoli insisted that the secret service agent would be a man for the next 50 years of its existence.

Asked if Bond could be played by a woman, Broccoli admitted: “I don't know if it would actually work. I don't think you can just change the gender of the character without any consequences.

“We have thought about doing a female spy story and I think that could be very exciting and challenging.

“If you were going to go with a female spy, you would want to write it for a woman, because I think they have many more dimensions to them and I think you would really want to make use of that.”

While a separate female agent has not been spawned yet from Broccoli's Eon Productions – set up by her dad Cubby in 1962 – she has re-invented the Bond girl.

Bond 25 will have Ana de Armas, Lashana Lynch and Léa Seydoux as the Bond women.

Naomie Harris will return as Eve Moneypenny.

The plot of the movie, it will follow 007 as he comes out of retirement to help a friend.

The movie is set to hit cinemas on April 8, 2020.
