Coronation Street spoilers: Yasmeen Nazir isolated as Geoff’s secret abuse exposed

Yasmeen Nazir (played by Shelley King) and Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) are in a relationship on the ITV soap but the Coronation Street favourite is unaware that she is the victim of a particular type of domestic abuse which will see her become isolated in upcoming episodes.

Geoff has been subtly controlling Yasmeen over the last few weeks and his manipulative behaviour is set to increase as he stages a bank robbery so he can be seen to protect Yasmeen.

Coronation Street will be exploring the effects of coercive control relationships in the upcoming storyline and viewers will watch Geoff deceive Yasmeen as well as those closest to her.

Discussing the storyline Coronation Street producer Iain Macleod said: “It’s common for people to think abusive behaviour has to be physical – but you can damage someone profoundly without laying a finger on them.

“Many thousands of people feel trapped in relationships with someone who claims to love them but who is actually taking them apart piece by piece, isolating them from friends and family and locking them in an invisible prison of fear and insecurity.

“Often, the abusive behaviours accumulate and intensify over time so that you don’t realise it’s happening – it’s an insidious type of brainwashing.

Explaining why the soap decided to tackle this storyline, Iain revealed: “I hope this story will help anyone going through similar experiences in the real world by highlighting that feeling undermined, belittled, controlled or intimidated by your partner is never okay.

“The old ‘sticks and stones’ adage is just plain wrong – words can be instruments of torture and manipulation.”

In upcoming episodes fans will see Geoff’s controlling behaviour escalate as he manoeuvres a number of situations to make Yasmeen depend on him.

As well as the robbery Geoff will take control of her bank account and set up CCTV equipment so he can keep his eye on Yasmeen.

The ITV soap worked closely with Women’s Aid and Independent Choices Greater Manchester on this storyline.

Teresa Parker Head of Media Relations & Communications at Women’s Aid said: “Coercive control underpins almost all abusive relationships, and Geoff has established himself at the centre of Yasmeen’s life, and manipulated her in so many ways, controlling what she can and can’t do.

“She is doubting her own judgement and memories.

“Gradually we are seeing the long term effects of living with an abusive partner, as she sees less of her family and friends and becomes increasingly isolated.”

Meanwhile earlier in the week viewers were distracted by a Gary Windass (Mikey North) car gaffe.

Viewers have seen Gary’s dark side recently after he murdered loan shark Rick Neelan (Greg Wood) and then borrowed Bethany Platt’s (Lucy Fallon) car to drive to the woods where he had left Rick’s body.

But fans of the ITV soap thought Bethany’s fiat 500 wasn’t the most intimidating car for a murderer.

One viewer sarcastically tweeted: “That was SO menacing, Gary driving off in a Fiat 500 #Corrie.”

“Gary Windass “Killer in a Fiat 500” Be afraid… Be very afraid! #Corrie,” another added.

A third remarked: “Gary the villain driving in a fiat 500, oooh you’re hard #corrie.”
