Britain's Got Talent is officially the most watched TV show of 2019

Britain’s Got Talent has been named as the most watched television show of 2019 so far.

The ITV talent series returned to the small screen on Saturday night with Ant McPartlin making his comeback after taking a backseat from the spotlight following his drink-driving arrest and spending time in rehab.

It was an epic episode too and viewers were left in tears as the 43-year-old reunited with his co-star Declan Donnelly for the first time in almost 12 months, with one child contestant from the Flakefleet Primary School summing up the whole nation when she whispered to him: ‘I’ve missed you.’

A spokesperson confirmed Britain’s Got Talent’s success to Metro.co.uk, revealing: ‘BGT pulled in an average of 8.3 million, an audience share of 45 per cent and a peak audience of 9.7 million last night making it the most watched show of the year so far.

The first episode of the show brushed over Ant’s hellish 2018, but a fan managed to capture the moment Ant got back to work and was welcomed back on stage with a huge hug from Dec.

‘We’ve got a bunch of acts backstage who are eager to get out here and perform for you,’ Dec told crowds at The London Palladium.

‘The judges are back, the buzzers are back… and someone else is back. My co-host for this series, would you please welcome – Mr Ant McPartlin!’

Ant cried: ‘Oh god, I’m really, really emotional right now. I’ve missed you all. ‘As for you, I’ve missed you!

‘What a lovely welcome. What a great show to come back to. I’m thrilled, I’m over the moon. Shall we crack on before I cry?’

Britain’s Got Talent airs Saturdays at 7.30pm on ITV.
