Avengers: Endgame smashes box office records making £1BILLION in a weekend

AVENGERS: Endgame has smashed box office records making £1BILLION in a weekend.

The final instalment in Marvel's Infinity Saga has broken global box office records raking in the money on it's first weekend of opening last Friday.

Avengers: Endgame has broken the record held by its predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War.

Avengers: Infinity War was the current record holder for biggest global opening, grossing $640.5 million and had the biggest domestic domestic launch worth $257.6 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Avengers sees Captain Marvel join an all-star line up including Iron Man, Thor and Spiderman to try and defeat Thanos, who snapped his fingers and wiped out half of the universe after getting hold of the Infinity Stones in the last film, Infinity War.

The movie, starring heavyweights Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson among others, is directed by the Russo brothers, who shot last year's Avengers: Infinity War.

Endgame is the sequel to Infinity War and is the last of 21 earlier titles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a blockbuster series of films that started with Iron Man in 2008.

Meanwhile critics have hailed Endgame the "greatest superhero movie ever."

Marvel fans and movie critics saw the final film in the Infinity Saga ahead of its release, and the reviews are already overwhelmingly positive.

American film critic Scott Mantz called it “the greatest superhero movie ever”, while Mashable’s Angie Han said it was an “immensely satisfying payoff”.

The Wrap writer Umberto Gonzalez said the movie – the final of Marvel’s 22 superhero movies – was an “epic ending to the Infinity Saga”.

Australian TV presenter Maude Garrett said she was an “emotional wreck and can’t stop crying”, while Peter Sciretta from Slash Film claimed to have cried “5-6 times.”

Meanwhile gamers will be in their element too as a  second Fortnite X Avengers event is coming starting this Thursday, April 25.

It was teased on Twitter by Epic Games with a picture of Brite Bomber, one of Fortnite's most recognisable 'characters' holding Captain America's shield.

The tease came hours before the film's world premiere in Los Angeles where the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Brie Larson dazzled to give the popular kids' film series an epic send-off.
