Antiques Roadshow: Guest fights back tears over UNBELIEVABLE valuation of teddy bear

Bunny, an expert on Antiques Roadshow, revealed she “screamed” when she set her eyes on the cuddly toy as she couldn’t believe it had been brought onto the show.

But while Bunny was surprised to see the item, the guest was shocked to learn just how much it was worth.

Beginning the segment, Bunny asked: “So, everybody knows this is a teddy bear. Do you know what it is?”

“Well,I believe it is a teddy bear hot water bottle,” the guest replied.

“It belonged to my great aunt and when she passed away it went to my mum and now I’m the custodian of it at the moment.”

Bunny continued: “Well, I must admit, I hope I didn’t give too much of a shock when I saw you coming to my table. I think I screamed didn’t I?”

“I was a bit nervous, I was thinking, ‘Oh, maybe it’s not the bear I thought it was,’” the guest laughed.

Bunny went on to explain to viewers exactly why the teddy was so exceptional.

“Well it certainly is and for me, I can’t tell you thats why I screamed because A, it’s a Steiff, B, it is white, which is incredibly rare and it’s a true white because it’s got the brown nose not the black nose,” Bunny remarked.

“A lot of the white ones are faded and you look under the arms and you can see what they were really coloured because the sun and all of the rest of it faded them.

“And then, looking again, you’re right, it’s a hot water bottle bear for a child to take to bed with. I mean, it’s just fantastic.”

She continued: “Anyway, it’s by Steiff, very early, the button in the ear is a blank button which makes it even earlier than the one that has Steiff on it. So it is one of the early, early hot water bottles.

“After this time they had zips down but this one just has hooks and eyes.

“Inside should be the size of a baked bean tin, with a brass screw on the top to out the water in.

“After a few years but was a little dangerous, they decided it wasn’t very safe this screw top and so they didn’t make them after that and inside here is a bit of stuffing because someone has taken that tin out.”

Moving on to value the item, Bunny revealed: “So we are talking about a Steiff teddy bear, circa 1904, incredibly rare colour, a rare size because most of them were smaller than this, and a value wise, £15,000.”

The guest was stunned by the valuation as they gasped: “What? 15? Really? And it’s just been put in a bag in the wardrobe.”

“That’s why it’s in such good condition…,” Bunny replied.

Noticing the guest was overcome with emotion, Bunny reached out to comfort them, adding: “Are you alright? You’ll have me crying soon.”

Also on the episode, another guest was amazed when they were told how much an apple corer was worth.

Expert Lisa Lloyd revealed it could sell for somewhere in the region of £800-£1200.

Antiques Roadshow airs Sunday on BBC One at 8pm.
