Winnipeg Blue Bombers all-star Matthias Goossen calls it a career
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will have a huge hole to fill along their offensive line with the retirement of centre Matthias Goossen.
The decision wasn’t entirely unexpected, as Goossen, 26, had informed the team about six weeks ago that he was contemplating this decision.
The 6’3″, 306 lb Richmond, BC native is coming off his first season as a CFL all star, and his fifth year with the Blue Bombers.
The second overall pick of the 2014 CFL draft, Goossen started 64 of the 87 games he played for Winnipeg, and also started all four playoff games.
“After much prayer and consideration, I have decided to end my football career,” said Goossen in a statement.
“The Blue Bombers organization has been great to me over these past five years, and I’m so grateful to have played for a team that does so much for its players and community.
“I want to thank the people of Winnipeg. I have met so many great people here and can say that this city has felt like home over my five seasons wearing the blue and gold.”
Bombers general manager Kyle Walter said Goossen represented the Bombers ‘the right way’ in the community.
“Matthias has shown tremendous professionalism both on and off the field,” said Walters.
“His work in the community is something we’re very proud of.
“He’s a fantastic young man, and we wish him all the best moving forward.”
