Welsh win ugly in Rome with points from Dan Biggar's boot as Italians batter and bruise their way to two tries in Six Nations

A week after their incredible 16-point comeback in Paris, Warren Gatland's side went to Rome, huffing and puffing — after a week of hard graft in the South of France.

Just as they did in the French capital, the men in red struggled during the first half with a well-drilled and resolute Italian defence not letting up inside their own 22.

Wales had dominated the first half before Italy scored a try through Braam Steyn with virtually their first spell of pressure in the entire game.

It was the sort of error that would give defensive coach Shaun Edwards nightmares.

But despite that the Welsh backs struggled to get the ball in hand — and looked predictable when running at the Italians.

When their try finally did come, it was thanks to some lovely inventiveness and fanst hands from their backs.

The ball eventually found its way to Liam Williams, who exploded through the line.

Then he spread it to Josh Adams, who touched down.

They had to wait another 15 minutes for another score as Gareth Anscombe came on for Biggar.

And the Cardiff Blues outside-half chipped a lovely ball past the try line and into the path of Owen Watkin.

Then Italy hit back with a score through Edoardo Padovani, during a passage of play brought about by a knock-on from Gareth Davies.
