Sunderland gain 250 US fans after Netflix series but are trolled by Newcastle over crying scenes

Black Cats owner Steward Donald, speaking on the Roker Report podcast, claimed 250 Americans have signed up to the Sunderland supporters club in the wake of the docuseries.

The series follows the Wearsiders' attempts to bounce back into the Premier League following relegation in 2017.

But the disaster-hit club endured a catastrophic campaign in the Championship and suffered a successive relegation to League One.

Sunderland sat £125.7million in debt at the end of the season, until owner Ellis Short cleared it and sold to a consortium led by Donald.

Sunderland 'Til I Die captured the heartbreak fans were put through and showed plenty of crying supporters as the club was relegated once again.

Viewers were so moved by the series that even across the pond, Americans have now offered their support.

Newcastle showed no sympathy towards their fierce rivals, though, and mocked them by singing "We've seen you cry on Netflix" during last night's Checkatrade Trophy clash.

Video footage of the chant went viral as 2,800 travelling Geordies' voices rang out at the Stadium of Light.

But Sunderland got the last laugh as they dumped Toon's Under-21s out of the competition with a resounding 4-0 win.
