Solskjaer must finish in top four to stand chance of getting Man Utd job, says Giggs

The Red Devils are currently sixth, level on points with Arsenal and just three behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

It is a remarkable improvement since Jose Mourinho's sacking in December, when Manchester United were 11 points adrift.

But six league wins out of six has significantly boosted United's chances of Champions League qualification.

Giggs, 45, thinks the Norwegian must break into that top four, though, in order to be kept on beyond the summer.

The Wales manager told ESPN: "Solskjaer does need a longer run, but he's making a brilliant case for it.

"If he carries on then why not, because he's got that experience with Mike Phelan coming in as well.

"He's got the link to the club, Michael [Carrick] and the coaching staff, obviously Ole as well, and the players look like they are enjoying themselves, the fans are enjoying themselves.

"The whole place has had a massive lift, so if you can keep that, that says something.

"But he will probably have to finish in the top four and do well in the FA Cup or the Champions League and then it would be very hard for him to not get the job."

Solskjaer surprised many with such a brilliant start as United boss – especially with the victory over Tottenham at Wembley – but Giggs reckons there is still big pressure.

The former winger was team-mates with Solskjaer between 1996 and 2007 before taking the reigns himself when David Moyes was sacked in 2014.

Moyes was gone when United were mathematically incapable of finishing in the top four and therefore could not qualify for the Champions League – they finished seventh and lost in the FA Cup third round at home to Swansea.

Giggs, to a certain extent, therefore knows what Solskjaer is going through.

He added: "It's not easy and a lot of people have been slightly disrespectful, saying there's no pressure.

"You put yourself under pressure. You're manager of the biggest club in the world, so you're going to put yourself under pressure.

"For Solskjaer, for any team, to win seven on the bounce is not easy, no matter who you are playing."

Solskjaer's next big test is the FA Cup fourth round as he takes his Red Devils squad to the Emirates to face Arsenal in the standout tie of the weekend.
