Shrewsbury 2 Wolves 2: Heartache for the Shrews as Raul Jimenez and Matt Doherty spare Premier League side blushes as they come back from two goals down

The League One side managed by ex-Wolves man Sam Ricketts were two up with minutes left thanks to second-half strikes from Greg Docherty and Luke Waterfall.

But the Wolves defender broke Shrews' hearts to deny the Shropshire side a famous win with a header deep into stoppage time to force a replay back down the road at the Molineux.

On loan Rangers midfielder Docherty broke the deadlock with a deadly finish after 47 minutes.

Then Waterfall, part of the Lincoln side which reached the quarter-finals two years ago, doubled the lead with a powerful header.

Sub Raul Jimenez pulled one back but the Shrews held on to humble their opponents who had knocked out Liverpool in the previous round.

It brought back memories of the Shrews FA Cup glory days in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Graham Turner, who masterminded Shrewsbury’s quarter-final runs in 1979 and 1982, looked on with pride as guest of honour.

The Shrews had also defeated Championship side Stoke in the previous round.

Nuno made six changes from the 4-3 win over Leicester and gave a debut to midfielder Ryan Giles who was born only 16 miles from the ground at Telford.

Wolves dominated possession during the opening 45 minutes and Adama Traore was guilty of a shocking miss mid-way through the half.

Doherty posed the biggest threat for the visitors and weaved his way to the by-line before his cut-back found Traore in space eight yards out.

But his finish lacked any sort of composure and he shot high over the bar.

Shrewsbury fired a warning to their Premier League opponents eight minutes before the break when a dipping 25 yarder from Gregg Docherty stung the palms of John Ruddy.

But after two minutes of the second half Docherty blasted Shrewsbury ahead.

Fejiri Okenabirhie weaved his way into the Wolves box before picking out Docherty and he smashed his rising shot past Ruddy into the top corner of the net.

After 71 minutes the Shrews were in dreamland when Waterfall was left unmarked to head in Ollie Norburn’s corner.

The visitors rallied and sub Ivan Cavaleiro made an instant impact when rifling home from 12 yards out.

And Doherty earned his side replay when he ghosted into the box unmarked to head home.
