Real Madrid’s £40m signing Rodrygo CAN’T play for first team because they have too many non-EU players – The Sun

REAL MADRID'S £40million signing Rodrygo Goes will not be able to play first-team matches for the club.

That is because Los Blancos have too many non-EU players.

Spanish rules currently allow three non-Europeans to in squads.

Article 230 of part A of the RFEF rules state: "Non-EU players registered for associated team can play for sponsored clubs or first teams under the following rules: A) When the sponsor club or first team are registered at a professional level, they can do so when there is a gap in the squad allowance for non-EU players as determined by the AFE, LNFP and RFEF, always with the limit of that allowance."

But those three spots have all already been taken at Real Madrid.

One of the three is Fede Valverde, the Uruguayan midfielder.

Valverde, 20, joined Real Madrid from Penarol in his homeland three years ago.

But according to Marca, Real Madrid are hopeful he will be granted a Spanish passport 'soon', enabling Rodrygo to become registered – this is looking likely to be in September.

Until then, though, Rodrygo looks like he will be forced to spend his first season at Real Madrid in the Castilla youth team.

It also means he is unlikely to be handed a number, yet.

That is despite the fact he is likely to be training with Zinedine Zidane's team, which includes the likes of Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale and Luka Jovic.

It was a similar case for Vinicius Junior, who joined from Flamengo 12 months ago.

Like his compatriot, Brazilian youngster Rodrygo had to wait until his 18th birthday to officially join the 13-time European champions.

Takefusa Kubo is another player who looks set to be restricted to Castilla this season after signing from FC Tokyo, although that was the plan anyway for the Japanese 18-year-old.
