Patriots’ Josh McDaniels not pursuing head coaching jobs after Packers’ move

For at least one more year, Josh McDaniels will be back with the New England Patriots.

The team’s offensive coordinator was a candidate for the head coaching job with the Packers and interviewed with the organization, but Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur was selected for the position. On Tuesday, McDaniels said in a conference call that he will not be pursuing any other open head coaching jobs.

“The book is closed,” McDaniels said of other head coaching jobs. “It's always a humbling experience to have an opportunity. I was thankful for the opportunity to meet with Green Bay. Always very educational to go through it. I’m completely focused on the Chargers and our season and finishing it strong and I’ll be here moving forward.”

McDaniels also added that he has had no contact with the Cleveland Browns about their head coaching role. With the Packers being the first team to hire a head coach – though the move hasn’t been formally announced – there are currently seven other open slots for head coaches in the league. Aside from Cleveland, the Dolphins, Broncos, Bengals, Jets, Buccaneers, and Cardinals are all also looking for new direction.

McDaniels agreed to become the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts last year but later reneged on his agreement and opted to return to New England as offensive coordinator. The Colts then hired Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich.

“You’d have to obviously ask them if that had anything to do with anything like that,” McDaniels said of his decision to back away from the Colts. “I’m grateful for the opportunity that I had. But obviously I’m more thankful for the opportunity that I have here. I’ve said before, I think I have one of the best jobs in the world and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue to compete this week against the Chargers.”

McDaniels served as the head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2009-10, compiling an 11-17 record.
