Misfit Drinkwater trolled by Chelsea fans furious at his £100k wages as club’s birthday tweet backfires

The frozen out 29-year-old has not been seen in a Chelsea shirt since his 30-minute appearance in the Community shield against Manchester City back in August.

Chelsea signed Drinkwater in September 2017 paying Leicester £35million for the midfielder, who won the Premier League title with the Foxes in 2016.

The England international made 22 appearances in his first season but he has only made the bench for Maurizio Sarri twice in competitive action this year.

Despite his limited game time, Drinkwater continues to cost the club £100,000 a week in wages, a fact many Blues fans were keen to remind their club today.

The Stamford Bridge club posted a seemingly innocuous happy birthday tweet to the former Leicester star, where they were soon flooded by furious Chelsea fans.

One fan wrote: "Best paid Instagrammer in the world; £100k a week."

Twitter user Phil Slattery agreed with that post, writing: "£100k a week. Trains 5 days a week. Has weekends off. Every day is Danny Drinkwater's birthday!"

Another posted: "Surprised you found any pictures of him," and "So you still remember him. Good!! But that's surprising."

Drinkwater has endured a torrid season in west London, but was drafted into Chelsea’s Europa League knock-out squad last month.

Chelsea have looked to offload the midfielder this season, with Sarri even admitting he has no plans to use Drinkwater as he does not suit his 4-3-3 formation.

Speaking in December, Sarri said: “I think for him the problem is only my football.

“He's a very good midfielder but he is suitable for a midfield two because with a three he is not really a central midfielder or suitable for centre right or centre left.”
